The Simpsons arcade game was the perfect excuse to hit the arcade with your whole crew: four sets of controls, four members of the family and Springfield crawling with goons in suits. Everybody grabbed their favorite, dropped a quarter and started swinging. The show was already huge on TV; in the arcade it became legendary.

It's pure Konami beat 'em up, with the show's sense of humor and graphics that looked like they were lifted straight out of an episode.

History

Konami released The Simpsons in 1991, right at the peak of Simpsons mania. The company was coming off its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade hit and ran the same play: famous characters, four players at once and tons of variety from stage to stage.

The story kicks off when Smithers steals a diamond and, in the chaos, ends up with Maggie. The family sets out to rescue her all over Springfield, with Mr. Burns waiting at the end.

How to play

Each character has a signature weapon: Homer uses his fists, Marge swings her vacuum cleaner, Bart attacks with his skateboard and Lisa with her jump rope. It plays with a joystick, an attack button and a jump button.

The best part is the team attacks: when two players get close, they can link up for a combo move, like rolling across the screen together and plowing through enemies. Along the way you'll find food to refill your health and stuff to throw. Between stages there are button-mashing mini-games, like inflating a balloon faster than your friends.

Fun facts

  • The cabinet came in both four-player and two-player versions.
  • The main villain is Mr. Burns, with Smithers pulling off the heist.
  • Konami used a formula a lot like its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game.

In the arcade

The Simpsons isn't on the UsuArcade floor yet, but it's on our wish list. If you want to tear through Springfield in the arcade, hit Want to Play on this page. The most-voted games get added first.

Meanwhile, the arcade has other brawlers and action games to play with friends: Final Fight, Capcom's two-player classic; Sunset Riders, also from Konami with the same goofy sense of humor; and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, with its dinos and classic cars.

Once The Simpsons lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
