Sunset Riders is the Wild West, arcade style: high-noon shootouts, cattle stampedes, rooftops to leap across and outlaws whose wanted posters flash on screen before they show up. Konami packed it with humor, color and nonstop pace, and there was always somebody ready to grab the other six-shooter.
History
Konami released it in 1991, at the height of its run of co-op arcade hits, fresh off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze. There were four-player cabinets as well as two-player versions.
A 16-bit console version came later, but the arcade original is the one most people remember, with its Western soundtrack and its gallery of colorful outlaws.
How to play
You choose from four bounty hunters: Steve and Billy pack revolvers, while Bob and Cormano carry shotguns that spray their shots. You fire in eight directions, jump, slide along the ground to dodge bullets and climb onto balconies and rooftops.
Each stage ends with a wanted outlaw, and the bounty goes straight to your score. Along the way you'll grab upgrades like dual pistols and rapid fire, and ride horseback through stampede sections. Old-timer tip: the slide saves more lives than any weapon, and standing still in the middle of Main Street is the fastest way to Boot Hill.
