Cadillacs and Dinosaurs packed three friends shoulder to shoulder, punching out thugs, grabbing whatever gun hit the floor and getting out of the way when a dinosaur came roaring onto the screen.
History
Capcom released Cadillacs and Dinosaurs in 1993, based on Mark Schultz's comic Xenozoic Tales. An animated series with the same characters aired that same year. The setting is a future where dinosaurs have returned and humanity scrapes by among ruins and rebuilt classic cars.
It arrived during Capcom's beat 'em up heyday, with gorgeous detailed sprites and a gun system you didn't see much in the genre. It never got an official home port back then, so for most people the arcade was the only place to play it, which only added to its cult status.
How to play
You pick from four characters: Jack Tenrec, the mechanic and hero; Hannah Dundee, the explorer; Mustapha Cairo, the quick engineer; and Mess O'Bradovich, the group's muscle. You've got an attack button and a jump button, and pressing both together fires off a special move that costs a little health.
What makes it special is the weapons: rifles, Uzis, bazookas and spears you can pick up and use until the ammo runs dry. The dinosaurs usually aren't your enemies, but if they get riled up by you or the poachers, you'd better clear out. In one stage you even get behind the wheel of the Cadillac and run down the bad guys.
