On UsuArcade, Final Fight plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. If one game could draw a crowd around a cabinet, it was Final Fight. Huge characters, streets packed with thugs, oil drums hiding whole roast chickens and a mayor who rips off his shirt to throw down. You dropped a quarter, your buddy dropped one too, and the two of you cleaned up Metro City.
It's the beat 'em up that set Capcom's bar at the end of the 80s, and plenty of people still call it the king of arcade brawlers. On UsuArcade it has its own cabinet on the floor and you can play it co-op right from your browser.
History
Capcom released Final Fight in 1989. During development it was shown off as a Street Fighter follow-up, which is why some of its characters later turned up in that series. In the end it became its own thing and one of the company's biggest arcade hits.
The story is pure 80s action movie: the Mad Gear gang kidnaps Jessica, daughter of Mayor Mike Haggar, to get him under their thumb. Haggar, a former pro wrestler, heads out to get her back with Cody, Jessica's boyfriend, and Guy, a martial arts expert.
How to play
Walk through the streets with the joystick, attack with one button and jump with the other. Get close to an enemy and you'll grab them for knees or a throw into the crowd. Press both buttons together for a special move that clears space around you, at the cost of a little health.
Each fighter plays differently: Haggar is slow but devastating with grabs, Guy is fast and nimble, and Cody is the all-rounder who's deadly with a knife. Smash barrels and crates for food that restores health, weapons like pipes and katanas, and items worth points.
Between stages you get bonus rounds, like wrecking a car with your bare hands before time runs out.
Fun facts
- During development it was announced as a Street Fighter sequel.
- Some of its characters later showed up in Capcom's fighting games.
- The car-smashing bonus round is one of the most iconic moments in arcade history.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Final Fight cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and clean up Metro City together, each with your own fighter. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.
Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
