Vigilante is Irem's street brawler: one hero working his way across the city, punching and kicking through the gang that kidnapped his girlfriend. No frills, all knuckles, the kind of game you played with your face close to the screen while a couple of kids behind you counted the bad guys.

At UsuArcade you can play Vigilante online for free, right in your browser. Sit down at its cabinet in the lobby, drop in a virtual coin and go clean up the streets, with an audience watching every hit.

History

Irem released it in 1988, and it's widely seen as the spiritual successor to its own Kung-Fu Master: the same left-to-right fight against waves of enemies closing in from both sides, now moved to the streets of a big American city with bigger, more detailed graphics.

It landed right in the middle of the beat 'em up boom, sharing arcade floors with Double Dragon and Renegade, and was ported to several home computers and consoles of the era.

How to play

You move left to right with a punch button and a kick button, plus jump and crouch. Thugs come at you from both sides, some with knives, chains or guns, and if one grabs you, you have to waggle the stick to break free. Every hit you take drains your energy.

If you spot the nunchucks, grab them: your reach and damage go way up until you get knocked down. Each stage ends with a boss who fights in his own style. The trick is choosing who to hit first so you never get sandwiched between two punks.

Fun facts

  • It's considered the spiritual successor to Irem's Kung-Fu Master.
  • The nunchucks are the only weapon you can pick up.
  • The rival gang is the one holding the hero's girlfriend.

In the arcade

On UsuArcade, Vigilante is one player per game: you sit down at the cabinet and it's all yours. But you're not really alone: friends can drop in as spectators, watch live and chat in the lobby.

It runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, nothing to install, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Your best score goes on the arcade's high score board for everyone else to chase.
