History
Double Dragon hit arcades in 1987, made by Technos Japan with Yoshihisa Kishimoto directing, and Taito handled it outside Japan. It became one of the most-played cabinets of the late 80s.
It wasn't the first beat 'em up, but it's the one that made the formula stick: two players at once, walking through streets, factories and forests, picking weapons up off the ground. Final Fight and everything after owe it big time.
How to play
Billy and Jimmy Lee fight across the city to rescue Marian from the Black Warriors gang. You've got punch, kick and jump, and mixing them gives you grabs, knee strikes, jump kicks and the legendary backward elbow.
Along the way you can take bats, whips, knives, crates, barrels and even sticks of dynamite off your enemies. Watch out for big bruisers like Abobo, who hit like a truck, and for the timer. In two-player, careful: your hits land on your partner too.
Fun facts
- If both players reach the end, the brothers have to fight each other to decide who gets Marian.
- The backward elbow is so overpowered that plenty of players used it for half the game.
- Outside Japan the gang was also known as the Shadow Warriors.
