On UsuArcade, Shock Troopers plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. Shock Troopers was one of those Neo Geo games you stumbled on in the back corner of the arcade and couldn't walk away from: top-down action, explosions everywhere and a pace that never lets up. With a buddy on the second stick, it was even better.
History
Saurus developed it for SNK's Neo Geo system and it came out in 1997. It picked up where top-down classics like Commando and Mercs left off, but with late-90s Neo Geo detail, swarms of enemies and over-the-top attitude.
Its cast of eight mercenaries, each with a signature special and personality, plus the option to bring a three-man squad, earned it a loyal following even though it was never one of the system's biggest names. It got a follow-up, Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad.
How to play
Right off the bat you choose between two modes: Lonely Wolf, with a single merc, or Team Battle, with a squad of three you can swap between mid-mission when one is low on health. Every character has their own grenade or special attack.
You shoot in eight directions while pushing through jungles, rivers and enemy bases, picking up better weapons and dodging with a combat roll that gets you out of a lot of trouble. You can hop into vehicles and, at certain points, choose which path to take. The bosses are huge, so learn their patterns.

In the arcade
Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Shock Troopers cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and tear through it together, each with your own merc. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.
Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
