Commando was the cabinet for the brave. The game dropped you in the jungle with a single soldier, and from there it was nothing but pushing north while bullets came at you from every direction. Some kids lasted ten seconds; others stretched one quarter into a whole afternoon with a crowd glued to the screen.
Now it's back within reach on UsuArcade. Open the arcade in your browser, sit down at the machine and hit INSERT COIN. Nothing to install, nothing to pay, on desktop or mobile.
History
Capcom released Commando in 1985. In Japan it was called Senjō no Ōkami, “Wolf of the Battlefield.” Its hero, Super Joe, became a minor Capcom mascot and popped up again in later games.
It helped make the top-down, on-foot vertical shooter a thing, and plenty of games borrowed the formula afterward. That catchy military theme blasted out of every arcade and followed the game onto the home computers of the era.
How to play
You move Super Joe in eight directions, and the screen scrolls up as you advance. One button fires your rifle the way you're facing; the other lobs grenades that sail over walls and trenches, which is exactly what you need for machine-gun nests and bunkers.
Grenades are limited, so grab every supply crate you see. Each area ends at a fortress gate that spits out waves of soldiers: keep moving, hold your ground and take out the guys charging straight at you. Freeing prisoners earns bonus points.
Fun facts
- Super Joe showed up again in later Capcom games.
- Grenades don't fly in a straight line; they land a set distance ahead, perfect for hitting guys behind cover.
- Its soundtrack is one of the most recognizable tunes of mid-80s arcades.
In the arcade
Commando was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.
Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
