Green Beret was pure 80s action-movie energy in a cabinet: one commando, a knife, and wave after wave of soldiers pouring in from both sides. Konami released it in 1985, and in a lot of the U.S. you'll remember it by its other name, Rush'n Attack.

Now you can step back up to the cabinet at UsuArcade, right in your browser, and find out if you still have the reflexes you had when it ate all your quarters.

History

Konami launched it at the height of the Cold War commando-movie boom, and the North American title, Rush'n Attack, was a not-so-subtle pun on Russian attack.

Its mix of side-scrolling action, jumping and ladders across several levels of height made it an arcade staple, and it was ported to a ton of home computers and consoles, including a version on the NES that plenty of kids rented over and over.

How to play

Push right and stab everyone who gets in your way. You can jump, crouch and take ladders up and down to switch levels and dodge the soldiers rushing you from both directions.

Some enemies drop special weapons like a flamethrower, a bazooka or grenades, each with limited ammo, so save them for the tough spots. Each stage ends with a special enemy wave, and your mission is to reach the prison camp and free the captives.

Fun facts

  • In North America the game was called Rush'n Attack.
  • Special weapons only carry a few shots, so knowing when to use them is half the battle.
  • Konami brought the game to many home systems during the 80s.

In the arcade

Green Beret was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.

Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
