On UsuArcade, 1943: The Battle of Midway plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. 1943: The Battle of Midway is one of those shooters you played nose-to-the-glass: enemy planes in tight formation, warships that fill the screen and an energy bar that drains without mercy. You fly a P-38 over the Pacific, and if your buddy has a quarter, you fly it side by side.
It followed up 1942 and improved on it in every way: more weapons, massive bosses and, best of all, two players at once. On UsuArcade it has its own cabinet on the floor, ready for takeoff right from your browser.
History
Capcom released 1943 in 1987 as the sequel to 1942, one of its first big hits. It's set during the Battle of Midway in World War II and swaps lives for an energy bar that drops when you get hit and also ticks down slowly over time.
It got a revised version in Japan called 1943 Kai and later a follow-up, 19XX. For a lot of fans, 1943 is where the series really found its groove.
How to play
Fly with the joystick and hold fire to keep the bullets coming. The second button (or both buttons together, depending on the version) unleashes a special attack that costs energy: lightning strikes or a loop that makes you briefly untouchable.
Shoot down red squadrons and POW icons drop. Shoot those icons to cycle them into different weapons: shotgun, three-way, auto-fire, laser or shells. Other pickups refill your energy. Special weapons only last so long, so keep swapping in fresh ones.
Each stage ends with a big warship or a bomber formation, and the final showdown is against the battleship Yamato.
Fun facts
- It's the direct sequel to Capcom's 1942.
- Instead of lives you get an energy bar that also drains on its own.
- The final boss is the battleship Yamato.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the 1943: The Battle of Midway cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and take down the enemy fleet together, each in your own plane. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.
Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
