Slap Fight looks like just another vertical shooter at first glance, and by your third quarter you're hooked. The secret is the power-up bar: you decide when to cash in your stars and what to bolt onto your ship, and every choice matters.

At UsuArcade you play it just the way it was, in your browser with nothing to install, sitting at its cabinet in the lounge.

History

Toaplan built it in 1986, back when the Japanese studio was starting to make a name in shooters, a genre it would eventually define. In North America it also showed up as Alcon.

Its menu-style power-up system, very much in step with mid-80s trends, gave it more depth than the simpler shooters sitting next to it.

How to play

You fly a ship scrolling up over a planet crawling with turrets, tanks and enemy fighters. Certain enemies drop stars, and each star moves the cursor on the bottom bar one slot. Hit the power-up button to grab whatever is highlighted.

Options include speed, side shots, wings that widen your spread, bombs, a laser, homing missiles and a shield. Saving up for the big stuff pays off, but getting shot down wipes it all, so you have to find the balance.

Fun facts

  • In the US the game also circulated under the name Alcon.
  • The wings that attach to your ship make it bigger, too: more firepower, bigger target.
  • Toaplan went on to become one of the most respected shooter studios of the 80s and 90s.

In the arcade

Slap Fight was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.

Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
