On UsuArcade, Aero Fighters plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. Aero Fighters is early-'90s arcade through and through: a vertical shooter with modern fighter jets, huge explosions, and a screen that turns into a bullet storm the second you get careless. It got even better when a buddy dropped in a quarter and flew right next to you.

It also had a goofy sense of humor that set it apart from other shooters: pilots with big personalities, each with their own jet and cutscenes that made you laugh even right after losing your last life.

History

Video System released the game in 1992. In Japan it was called Sonic Wings, and in the West it arrived as Aero Fighters, the name most players outside Japan remember.

It was popular enough to launch a string of sequels with more pilots and stages spread across the globe, making it one of the best-loved shooter series of the decade.

How to play

Before takeoff you pick a country and a pilot. Every jet has its own main shot and special weapon, so your choice really changes how you play. One button fires and the other drops a bomb that clears the screen and bails you out of tight spots.

Grab the items some enemies drop to power up your shot and earn extra bombs. Bosses usually have several parts to take out, so focus on the guns throwing the most bullets. And don't burn every bomb right away; saving one for the boss makes all the difference.

Fun facts

  • In Japan it was called Sonic Wings.
  • Every pilot has a unique jet, special weapon, and cutscenes.
  • The ending changes depending on which pilot finishes the game.

In the arcade

Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Aero Fighters cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and clear the skies together, each with your own pilot. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.

Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
