Xain'd Sleena was one of those cabinets that caught your eye from across the arcade with its bright colors and its armored bounty hunter leaping between platforms and blasting everything in sight. Not many folks remember the name, but anyone who dropped a quarter in remembers the planet-hopping.
On UsuArcade it has its own cabinet: sit down, hit INSERT COIN and pick your first destination. Nothing to install, on computer or phone.
History
Technos Japan made it in 1986, a year before the same studio blew up arcades with Double Dragon. Outside Japan it also showed up under the name Soldier of Light.
It mashed genres together in a way that was pretty bold for the time: on-foot platform action on each planet's surface and side-scrolling shooter stages in space between worlds. That variety set it apart from most of what was in arcades in the mid-80s.
How to play
You start on a map of planets and choose where to touch down. On the surface you run, jump and shoot, hopping between levels of the stage and grabbing power-ups that swap your weapon. A boss waits at the end of every planet.
Between planets you climb into your ship and the game turns into a side-scrolling shooter. Learn where the enemies come from and don't skip the weapon upgrades; with the basic blaster, some bosses take forever to go down.
Fun facts
- Outside Japan it was also released as Soldier of Light.
- Technos Japan put it out a year before Double Dragon.
- Letting players pick the order of the planets was rare for a 1986 arcade game.
In the arcade
Xain’d Sleena was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.
Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
