Ghosts 'n Goblins was the cabinet that devoured quarters by the fistful and somehow always had a line. We've all watched Sir Arthur lose his armor, stand there in his boxers, and get taken out half a second later by a red demon diving out of nowhere. And we all fed it another quarter.
Now you can suffer through it again in the UsuArcade lounge, right in your browser with nothing to install, with friends watching every attempt.
History
Capcom released it in 1985 under director Tokuro Fujiwara, who went on to shape more of the company's big games. In Japan it was called Makaimura, roughly 'demon world village.'
It mixed platforming, storybook horror and legendary difficulty, and kicked off a series that continued with Ghouls 'n Ghosts and more.
How to play
You march Sir Arthur to the right through a graveyard, forests, caves and castles to rescue the princess kidnapped by demons. Jump and throw weapons: the starting lance, the speedy dagger, the torch, the axe and more. You have to grab what drops, even when it's a downgrade.
One hit strips your armor and the next one kills you. You'll need to learn where enemies spawn and commit to every jump, since you can't steer in midair. And heads up: beating it once isn't enough to see the real ending.
Fun facts
- Arthur in his underwear is one of the most iconic images of 80s arcades.
- To see the true ending you have to clear the game twice in a row.
- The red flying demon near the start earned a reputation all its own as a quarter-eater.
In the arcade
Ghosts ’n Goblins was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.
Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
