Wonder Boy was one of the most charming platformers in the arcade: a blond kid in a loincloth sprinting through forests, caves and beaches to rescue his girlfriend, eating fruit to keep from running out of steam. Bright, fast and just hard enough to make you dig for another quarter.

History
It was developed by a studio called Escape, which soon renamed itself Westone, and Sega released it in 1986. Its mix of speed and tight jumps made it an arcade favorite, and it showed up on Sega's home consoles too.
The series then took a sharp turn: Wonder Boy in Monster Land added shops, armor and RPG elements. Meanwhile, Hudson reworked the original game with a new hero and released it as Adventure Island, which many Nintendo kids played first.
How to play
You run to the right, jumping between platforms and dodging boulders, campfires and critters. The vitality bar at the top keeps ticking down, and the only way to refill it is eating the fruit along the way. Let it empty out, or touch an enemy, and you lose a life.
Crack open eggs to find power-ups: a stone hatchet to attack, a skateboard that speeds you up and soaks a hit, or a guardian angel that makes you invincible for a while. Some eggs hide nasty surprises, though. At the end of each area there's a boss you have to hit square in the head.
