On UsuArcade, Bubble Bobble plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. Few cabinets were made for two quite like Bubble Bobble. One of you was green, the other was blue, and together you cleared level after level, trapping monsters in bubbles and popping them so they rained down as fruit.

It was cute, it was fast, and that bouncy music could be heard from the front door of the arcade. And when your buddy ran out of lives, you'd both be digging for another quarter so nobody got left behind.

History

Taito released Bubble Bobble in 1986. Designer Fukio Mitsuji built it around playing as a pair, and it shows: co-op isn't a bonus mode here, it's the whole point.

There are a hundred single-screen levels, and the ending changes depending on whether you finish solo or with a partner. Its success spun off a whole family of sequels and spin-offs, including Rainbow Islands and Puzzle Bobble, and turned Bub and Bob into Taito mascots.

How to play

Move your dragon with the joystick, jump with one button, and blow bubbles with the other. Trap an enemy in a bubble, then pop it by jumping on it or running into it; the monster flies off and lands as fruit or another prize. Pop a bunch at once and the payout goes way up.

You can bounce on your own bubbles to reach higher platforms. Grab the letter bubbles to spell EXTEND for an extra life. And don't dawdle: hang around a level too long and an unbeatable enemy shows up and chases you until you clear it.

Fun facts

  • There are 100 levels, and you only see the full ending by finishing with two players.
  • It was designed by Fukio Mitsuji.
  • Spelling out EXTEND earns you an extra life.

In the arcade

Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Bubble Bobble cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and steer Bub and Bob at the same time, round after round. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.

Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
