On UsuArcade, Tumble Pop plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. Tumble Pop is one of those bright, goofy arcade games that hooked you before you knew it. You play a ghost hunter with a vacuum pack: suck up monsters, store them in the tank, then fire them out as a rolling ball that bowls over everything in its path. The more you take out at once, the bigger the points and the prizes.
It's got that Snow Bros and Bubble Bobble feel, but with its own pace and a world tour of famous cities. On UsuArcade it has its own cabinet on the floor and plays two-player right from your browser.
History
Data East released Tumble Pop in 1991, right in the heyday of single-screen, two-player platformers. The pitch was simple: fast games, tons of different enemies and a steady drip of little rewards on every screen.
The game hops between recognizable places around the planet, with big bosses capping off each area. It wasn't the most famous game of its type, but people who found it at their local arcade kept coming back.
How to play
Move across the platforms and hold the fire button to switch on the vacuum and pull in nearby enemies. Once you've got some in the tank, let go to launch them as a ball that rolls along the floor and takes out anything it hits.
Use the jump button to get between platforms. Defeated enemies drop items worth points, so it pays to fill the tank before you fire: one well-aimed roll can wipe out half the screen.
Each area ends with a big boss that takes patience and good aim.
Fun facts
- It often gets compared to Snow Bros for its single-screen, two-player setup.
- The hero catches enemies with a vacuum, which was a pretty fresh idea at the time.
- Each area of the trip has its own look inspired by a place somewhere in the world.
In the arcade
Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Tumble Pop cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and vacuum up monsters side by side. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.
Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
