Mercs was the perfect military action game to hit the arcade with two buddies: three players at once, each with their own merc, blasting through jungles, rivers and enemy bases. If Commando was intense, this one packed the screen with soldiers, tanks and explosions.

You could also hijack enemy vehicles, swap weapons on the fly and drop bombs that wiped out the whole screen. Pure 80s action movie crammed into a cabinet.

History

Capcom released Mercs in 1990 as the sequel to Commando; in Japan it was titled Senjou no Ookami II, the same Japanese name as Commando with a number tacked on. The story follows a team of mercenaries sent in to rescue a former president kidnapped by rebels in a fictional African country.

The original cabinet let three people play at once, which was rare for shooters at the time. It later came home on Sega consoles, including the Genesis.

How to play

Move in eight directions with the joystick and fire with one button. The other button sets off a Mega Crash bomb that takes out every enemy on screen; you don't get many, so save them for when you're surrounded.

Along the way you'll pick up new weapons like flamethrowers, rocket launchers and spread shot, which power up if you grab the same one more than once. There are also med kits to heal and enemy vehicles you can drive, like jeeps, boats and tanks. Each stage ends with a huge boss, usually an armored vehicle or a fortress.

Fun facts

  • It's the sequel to Capcom's Commando.
  • The original cabinet supported three players at once.
  • Mega Crash bombs clear every enemy off the screen.

In the arcade

Mercs isn't on the UsuArcade floor yet, but it's on our wish list. If you want to assemble your squad in the arcade, hit Want to Play on this page. The most-voted games get added first.

Meanwhile, the arcade has its direct predecessor, Commando, with the same run-and-gun style; Shock Troopers for some jungle action with a partner; and the Metal Slug series, with all its over-the-top mayhem.

Once Mercs lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
