Metal Slug 2 is the sequel that turned a surprise hit into a full-blown series. Everything people loved about the first one, the gorgeous hand-drawn detail, the bearded POWs handing out goodies, the over-the-top explosions, came back with twice the cast, ridiculous transformations and a plot twist that changed the series for good.
History
SNK released it in 1998 for the Neo Geo, two years after the original Metal Slug. It was the first game to make Eri Kasamoto and Fio Germi playable alongside veterans Marco and Tarma, and that foursome has been the face of the series ever since.
It was so ambitious that the hardware bogged down when the screen got crowded. The next year SNK released Metal Slug X, a remixed version that smoothed out much of the slowdown and reshuffled enemies and weapons.
How to play
You run right, shooting and lobbing grenades, and free POWs who drop weapons like the Heavy Machine Gun, the flamethrower and the rocket launcher. Special weapons have limited ammo; run dry and you're back to the pistol.
The thing everybody remembers is the transformations: get hit by a mummy's breath and you turn into a slow-moving mummy with a different attack, and eat too much food and you get fat, which changes how you shoot. It also introduced vehicles like the Camel Slug, a camel with a cannon strapped on, and the Slug Flyer fighter jet. And heads up for the final stretch: Morden's army isn't the only enemy out there.
