A lot of fans call Metal Slug 3 the high point of the series, and in arcades at the turn of the millennium there was always someone at the cabinet trying to one-credit it. It's everything that made Metal Slug great, only longer, more varied and way crazier: giant crabs, zombies that turn you into a zombie and a final mission that just keeps going.
History
SNK released it in 2000 on its Neo Geo hardware, during some of the company's roughest years. Even so, the team delivered one of the most ambitious entries in the series, packed with content and hand-drawn animation.
It brings back all four heroes from Metal Slug 2 and X (Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio) and takes the war against General Morden somewhere new: a Martian invasion that comes to light partway through.
How to play
Run, jump and shoot right, up and down, with grenades for backup and special weapons you earn by freeing POWs. The big new feature is routes: in several missions the path splits and you choose where to go, so two runs can look very different.
There are more vehicles than ever, including a submarine, an elephant, an ostrich and a jumping mech. Watch out for transformations, too: get bitten by a zombie and you become one, slow but with a devastating attack. The final mission, set in space, is famous for how incredibly long it is.
