Contra was the cabinet you hit with your best buddy. Two action-movie commandos blasting their way through a jungle where things that weren't quite human started showing up. It looked like the poster for every R-rated movie you weren't allowed to rent.

It was the perfect Saturday: a quarter each and see how far you could get without fighting over who got the good gun.

History

Konami released it in 1987. In Europe it was called Gryzor, and over the years Contra became one of the company's best-known action series.

Its home version on the NES, heavily reworked and expanded, is the one many people remember best, but it all started with this arcade game.

How to play

Run, jump and shoot in eight directions. Some stages scroll sideways through the jungle, one climbs straight up a waterfall, and others put the camera behind your soldier as you push through enemy base corridors, blowing up the core on each wall.

Flying capsules drop weapons: machine gun, laser, fire shot and the famous Spread Gun that sprays bullets in a fan. One hit kills you, so moving smart matters as much as shooting.

Fun facts

  • In Europe it was released as Gryzor.
  • The two heroes are Bill Rizer and Lance Bean.
  • The enemy turns out to be alien in the end: the dreaded Red Falcon.
