On UsuArcade, E-SWAT: Cyber Police plays as online two-player co-op: you on your phone or PC, your friend on theirs, in the same game and in real time. E-SWAT had everything a kid in the late 80s could ask for: cops of the future, a city overrun with crime, a robotic battle suit and a partner by your side to split the work. Sega dropped it into arcades right when cyborg cop movies were all the rage, and it showed.

History

Sega released it in 1989 on its System 16 board, the same family of hardware behind several of its hits from that era. A Genesis version arrived a year later, quite different from the arcade, and plenty of players met that one first.

Earning your armor by making arrests gave it a sense of progression you didn't see much back then: you weren't a superhero from the start, you had to work your way up one bust at a time.

How to play

You move left to right through the streets of Cyber City, shooting criminals and dodging their fire. At first you're a regular officer with little firepower and not much toughness. Bring in enough wanted criminals and you get promoted into the ICE combat suit, which can take more hits and packs heavier weapons.

The key is to take it slow, don't charge into the next group of thugs, and pick your moments between volleys. Every stage ends with a boss worth studying before you go all in.

Fun facts

  • The arcade game runs on Sega's System 16 hardware.
  • The 1990 Genesis version has its own stages and structure; it isn't a straight port.
  • Getting promoted to the ICE suit depends on how many criminals you arrest.

In the arcade

Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the E-SWAT: Cyber Police cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and patrol Cyber City together. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.

Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
