If any cabinet could get four friends crowded around one screen, it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, each with their own weapon and joystick, beating down the Foot Clan with the cartoon theme blasting. Finding it open on a Saturday afternoon was practically a miracle.

It isn't in the UsuArcade arcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you want it in the arcade, give it your vote.

History

Konami released it in 1989, right at the peak of the late-80s cartoon craze, and it became one of the biggest hits in its arcade lineup. Its four-player cabinet set the template for a lot of team brawlers that followed.

It came home to the NES as TMNT II: The Arcade Game, and in some European countries the license was renamed Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

How to play

Pick your turtle and fight your way through city streets, a burning building, the sewers and the Technodrome. Each turtle has his signature weapon: Leonardo's katanas, Michelangelo's nunchucks, Donatello's bo staff and Raphael's sai, each with its own reach and speed.

You can jump, attack in midair and even fling enemies at the screen. Pizza restores your health. Every stage ends with a familiar villain from the show, all the way up to Shredder and Krang. Pro tip for group play: don't all bunch up on one side; spread out and split up the Foot soldiers.

Fun facts

  • Your mission is to rescue reporter April O'Neil and Splinter.
  • On the NES it was titled TMNT II: The Arcade Game.
  • Some hits send Foot soldiers flying right at the screen.

In the arcade

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on the arcade wishlist and you can vote for it with the “I want to play it” button; the most-wanted games land first.

Until then, the arcade has other team brawlers: Capcom's Final Fight; Double Dragon, the game that started it all; and Sunset Riders, another Konami co-op favorite. Free in your browser, with chat, spectators and arcade high scores.

Once Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
