The Punisher was the most hard-hitting of the beat 'em ups Capcom rolled into arcades in the early 90s. A Marvel comic in cabinet form, with comic panels between stages, thugs coming in by the dozen and the option to pull a gun when things got ugly.
It was one of those two-player games that looked great from behind: two buddies, a whole city full of goons and zero downtime.
History
Capcom released it in 1993, based on the Marvel Comics character. It came after Final Fight and the company's other brawlers and put all that experience into a more varied combat system.
It was one of the Capcom and Marvel team-ups that soon led to some very well-known fighting games as well.
How to play
Pick Frank Castle, the Punisher, or Nick Fury and fight your way through the streets, docks and buildings of the Kingpin's crime empire. Punch, jump and grab enemies to throw them or put them in holds.
You can pick up weapons off the floor, from knives and bats to much heavier hardware, and at certain moments your character draws his gun automatically. Grenades are there to get you out of a jam. Every area ends with a boss, all the way up to the Kingpin himself.
