Long before the Avengers took over movie theaters, there was a cabinet at the arcade where four friends could be Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye and the Vision all at once. Flinging the shield and watching it come back, blasting through the sky between buildings and squaring off with comic book villains was a dream come true for any kid with a pocket full of quarters.

Captain America and The Avengers isn't on UsuArcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you want it in the lobby, vote with “I want to play it.”

History

Data East released Captain America and The Avengers in 1991 under license from Marvel. It was a side-scrolling beat 'em up built for groups, mixing on-foot stages with flying sections that basically turned it into a shooter.

The big bad is the Red Skull, backed up by a lineup of classic Marvel villains. Its digitized voices, full of famously awkward English, became legendary with players and still get quoted fondly today.

How to play

Choose Captain America, who throws his shield; Iron Man, with blasts from his gauntlets; Hawkeye, with his bow; or the Vision, with energy beams. You've got an attack button and a jump button: up close you punch, and from a distance you use each hero's ranged attack.

You can pick up objects in the scenery, and hurl them at enemies. Some stages take to the air, with the screen scrolling on its own while you dodge and shoot. Bosses are straight out of the comics: learn their patterns and gang up on them.

Fun facts

  • Four heroes could play at once: Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye and the Vision.
  • It mixes on-foot brawling with flying shooter sections.
  • Its quirky digitized one-liners are a fan favorite to this day.

In the arcade

Coming soon to UsuArcade. When it arrives, the plan is to assemble all four Avengers from home, each with a hero, and the lobby watching. Until then, for co-op brawling there's Sunset Riders, Final Fight and Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja, another Data East classic: they're all in the lobby and free to play.
