Some arcade games you remember for the gameplay, some for the cabinet. X-Men is both. The big version had two screens side by side and room for six players at once, each picking a mutant. Seeing that thing packed with kids all yelling at the same time was a show all by itself.

The formula was classic Konami beat 'em up: punch your way through the city, wade through waves of robots, and unleash your mutant power when things got hairy. Simple, loud, and perfect for the whole crew.

History

Konami released X-Men in 1992, right in the golden age of beat 'em ups built on comic book and cartoon licenses. It's based on the late-'80s animated pilot and pits the team against Magneto and his henchmen.

Besides the six-player, dual-screen cabinet, there was a more common four-player version. Over the years it's become a cult classic, remembered as much for its sheer size as for some famously clunky English lines from the villains.

How to play

Choose from Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Dazzler. One button attacks, one jumps, and a third unleashes your mutant power, which wipes out everything on screen but costs you a bit of health.

Most enemies are Sentinels and robots that come in waves, with classic comic book villains waiting at the end of each stage. The more players, the more chaos, so coordinate your mutant powers so you don't all blow them at once, and let the toughest player soak up the hits.

Fun facts

In the arcade

X-Men isn't in the arcade yet. It's on the wish list, and you can hit “I Want to Play It” on this page to move it up. Coming soon to UsuArcade if the votes call for it.

In the meantime, you can team up with friends in Sunset Riders, another Konami classic, or in Final Fight and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, all ready for co-op action in the arcade.

Once X-Men lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
