Toki

Toki made you grin the second you saw it: a big ape stomping through the jungle, spitting shots at the critters. Under all that charm was a tough platformer that ate quarters without mercy, and you loved it anyway.

And it came with a football helmet power-up. Nobody really got why, and everybody loved it.

History

Small Japanese studio TAD Corporation developed it in 1989. In Japan it was called JuJu Densetsu.

It was a big hit in European arcades and was ported to several home computers and consoles of the era, which is where a lot of players first found it.

How to play

An evil sorcerer kidnaps Toki's girlfriend and turns him into an ape. You make your way through jungles, caves, icy zones and castles, jumping and spitting projectiles at enemies.

Power-ups along the way include a triple shot, fire breath, bigger spitballs and the famous helmet that protects you from stuff falling from above. Every stage is on a timer, and there's always a hefty boss waiting at the end.
