Ghouls'n Ghosts is Sir Arthur's second adventure and one of the toughest, most beloved arcade games of the late 80s. Capcom released it in 1988 with far more detailed graphics than the original and the same brutal attitude.
Watching Arthur get knocked down to his boxer shorts was still as funny as it was infuriating, and just clearing the first stage earned you some respect around the arcade.
History
It's the direct sequel to Ghosts'n Goblins, released in Japan as Dai Makaimura, and was directed by Tokuro Fujiwara, who also created the original.
It got some fondly remembered home versions, including the Sega Genesis port, and was followed years later by Super Ghouls'n Ghosts.
How to play
Run, jump and throw weapons: lance, dagger, torch, axe or disc, swapping them as you pick up new ones. This time you can also fire straight up, and straight down mid-jump.
Some treasure chests hold golden armor that lets you charge up a magic attack that changes with your weapon. Others release a magician who can turn you into a duck or an old man. Like the first game, you have to beat it twice to see the true ending.
Fun facts
- In Japan it was called Dai Makaimura.
- Golden armor lets you unleash charged magic attacks.
- You have to beat the game twice to see the real ending.
