Garou: Mark of the Wolves showed up just as arcades were starting to thin out, and that's exactly why everyone who found one remembers it so fondly. Silky animation, lively stages and an almost brand-new roster: this was SNK's 2D fighting at its peak.

It's not in the UsuArcade arcade yet, but it's already on the wish list.

History

SNK released Garou in 1999 on its Neo Geo hardware as the next chapter of the Fatal Fury series. Instead of recycling the cast, it introduced a new generation led by Rock Howard, son of Geese, alongside an older Terry Bogard who swapped his trademark cap for a jacket.

Over the years it's become one of SNK's most respected fighters, and it still shows up at classic fighting game tournaments.

How to play

It's a one-on-one fighter with four attack buttons. The headline mechanic is Just Defense: block right as the hit lands and you gain back a little health and recover faster to punish. It rewards nerves of steel over button mashing.

Before each fight you pick where on your life bar T.O.P. mode kicks in, giving you extra power and a special attack while your health sits in that zone. Choosing it well can flip a whole match.

Fun facts

  • Terry Bogard trades his classic cap for a jacket and a more grown-up look.
  • The lead, Rock Howard, is the son of villain Geese Howard.
  • Just Defense forces you to read your opponent instead of just attacking.

In the arcade

Once Garou: Mark of the Wolves lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
