On UsuArcade, Street Fighter II goes head-to-head online against a friend: each of you on your own phone or PC, in the same game and in real time. Street Fighter II changed the arcade forever. Suddenly there were crowds around one cabinet, quarters lined up on the control panel to claim next game and rivalries that lasted all summer. Hadouken, Shoryuken and Sonic Boom became playground vocabulary overnight.

History

Capcom released it in 1991 as the follow-up to the original Street Fighter, but the leap was massive: eight selectable fighters, each with their own style and special moves, and six buttons for light, medium and heavy punches and kicks. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, Zangief, E. Honda and Dhalsim became icons for an entire generation.

Its success kicked off a flood of fighting games and a long run of updates from Capcom itself, starting with Champion Edition, which let you play as the four bosses.

How to play

Matches are best two out of three rounds. The stick moves, jumps, crouches and blocks when you hold back; the six buttons throw light, medium and heavy attacks. Special moves come from stick motions plus a button, like quarter-circle forward plus punch for Ryu and Ken's fireball.

In single-player you travel the world beating the other fighters and then the four bosses, with bonus stages in between, like smashing up a car. If a second player jumps in mid-game, it's on: head-to-head.

Fun facts

  • Combos were basically a happy accident: chaining hits before the opponent recovered wasn't planned as a core technique.
  • Three of the bosses swapped names between the Japanese and Western versions.
  • One bonus stage has you wreck a car with punches and kicks.

In the arcade

Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Street Fighter II cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and go toe-to-toe in a real match. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.

Your friend can even jump in after you've already started. Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
