If Street Fighter II turned the arcade upside down, Champion Edition was the update everybody was begging for. For the first time you could play as the four bosses, the same guys who'd been wiping the floor with you at the end of the single-player run. On top of that, both players could pick the same fighter: Ryu vs. Ryu, Guile vs. Guile, with a different color to tell them apart.
It was the fighting game cabinet of 1992 in arcades, pizza joints and convenience stores everywhere, with a row of quarters lined up on the edge of the control panel to call next game against whoever was on a streak.
History
Capcom released Street Fighter II': Champion Edition in 1992 as a revision of the original 1991 Street Fighter II. Besides playable bosses and mirror matches, it rebalanced the cast, tweaked a bunch of moves and nudged the game speed up a notch.
It was such a hit that another revision, the even faster Hyper Fighting, followed soon after. Champion Edition also made it to home consoles, and for a lot of players it's the version where they really learned to play Street Fighter.
How to play
It plays with a joystick and six buttons: three punches and three kicks, light to heavy. Special moves come from stick motions: a quarter-circle for the Hadouken, the Z motion for the Shoryuken, or holding back then pushing forward for charge moves like Guile's and Blanka's.
The four bosses each have their own style: Balrog is a boxer who only throws punches, Vega is fast with a claw and mask, Sagat throws fireballs high and low, and M. Bison mixes charge attacks with serious mobility. Win two rounds to take the match, and every win comes down to reading your opponent and punishing their mistakes.
Fun facts
- It was the first version of Street Fighter II with all four bosses playable.
- It allowed mirror matches with the same fighter in two different colors.
- Another revision, the faster Hyper Fighting, came next.
In the arcade
Champion Edition isn't on the UsuArcade floor yet, but it's on our wish list. If you want to play as the bosses in the arcade, hit Want to Play on this page. The most-voted games get added first.
Meanwhile, the arcade already has the original Street Fighter II for head-to-head fights with your friends, Final Fight for Capcom's classic two-player brawling and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, another early-90s Capcom favorite.
Once Street Fighter II': Champion Edition lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
