Forgotten Worlds grabbed your attention the second you walked up to the cabinet, and it was the controls that did it. The joystick didn't just move your soldier, it also rotated to aim your shots in any direction. With two players flying at once through a wrecked city and giant bosses filling half the screen, it was one of the flashiest machines in the arcade in the late 80s.

It isn't in the UsuArcade arcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you remember the shop and those huge bosses, give it your vote.

History

Capcom released it in 1988; in Japan it's called Lost Worlds. It was one of the first games on Capcom's CP System board, the same hardware that would soon run Final Fight and Street Fighter II.

It was ported to the Genesis and several home computers, though without the rotary joystick it played quite differently. In the arcade, that control scheme was its calling card.

How to play

You control one of the two Nameless Soldiers, flying around the screen with a jetpack and a satellite unit at their side. Push the stick to move and twist it to swing your aim around, so you can hit whatever's coming from behind, above or below.

Enemies drop coins called zenny. Partway through stages a shop shows up where you can spend them on stronger weapons, armor, health and other gear. The trick is saving up for the best weapons and learning how the bosses attack, since they're massive and have multiple parts to take out.

Fun facts

In the arcade

Forgotten Worlds is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on the arcade wishlist and you can vote for it with the “I want to play it” button; the most-wanted games get in first.

Until then, the arcade has other Capcom classics and shooters to play with friends: 1943: The Battle of Midway, Black Tiger, which has its own upgrade shop, and Aero Fighters. Free in your browser, with chat, spectators and arcade high scores.

Once Forgotten Worlds lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
