Caveman Ninja, better known to a lot of players as Joe & Mac, was one of those cabinets that made you grin the second you saw it: two cavemen with green and blue hair whacking giant dinosaurs with stone axes, all in huge, colorful sprites. Data East released it in 1991.
It was the perfect game to jump into with a buddy and crack up at the goofy faces the enemies made.
History
Data East gave it a Saturday-morning-cartoon vibe and massive bosses, very much in the style of early-90s arcade games. Outside the arcade it really took off thanks to its Super Nintendo version.
The story is simple: a rival band of Neanderthals has kidnapped the women of the tribe, and Joe and Mac set out to bring them home.
How to play
Run, jump and attack with your weapon, which you can swap by grabbing others: stone axes, bones, fire, wheels or boomerangs. Hold the button for a stronger charged attack.
Your health drains slowly over time as well as from hits, so eat the food you find along the way. At some points the path splits and you pick a route, and every stage ends with a giant dinosaur boss.
Fun facts
- In many places it's known as Joe & Mac.
- Your health drains over time, not just from hits.
- Alternate paths change which stages you play.
