Plenty of people never knew Super Mario Bros. had its own arcade cabinet. Vs. Super Mario Bros. showed up in 1986 with the same plumber, the same pipes and the same Bowser, but with nastier traps built to make every quarter go faster.
It was the kind of oddball machine you'd stumble onto at a bowling alley or arcade, and it caught off guard the kids who had the home version memorized.
History
Nintendo released it on its VS. System, cabinets that brought the company's console games into arcades with tweaks for the coin-op business.
This version mixes stages from the original with remixed ones and a few that later turned up in the Japanese sequel, with more enemies, tougher jumps and fewer freebies.
How to play
Run and jump right as Mario, stomping Goombas, dodging Koopas and busting blocks. The mushroom makes you grow, the flower lets you throw fireballs and the star makes you invincible for a bit.
Reach the flagpole at the end of each level and take down Bowser in the castles. These stages are harder than the home version, so take it slow and protect your lives.
Fun facts
- It ran on Nintendo's VS. System arcade hardware.
