On UsuArcade, Track & Field goes head-to-head online against a friend: you compete event by event, each on your own phone or PC, in real time. If one cabinet could be heard from the parking lot, it was Track & Field: a frantic drumroll of buttons, kids with red palms, and a crowd gathered around cheering like it was the Olympic final. Konami turned track and field into an endurance test for your fingers, and it was a huge hit.

History

Konami released it in 1983, as Hyper Olympic in Japan, right as excitement was building for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The cabinet came with big, heavy-duty buttons, because Konami knew exactly what players were going to do to them.

It was a smash that spawned sequels and home versions. Two athletes running at the same time on one screen made it one of the most social machines of its era.

How to play

You've got two run buttons and one action button. To run, alternate the run buttons as fast as humanly possible; the action button jumps, throws or locks in your angle. The events are the 100-meter dash, long jump, javelin, 110-meter hurdles, hammer throw and high jump.

Every event has a qualifying mark; miss it and your game is over. In the jumps and throws, the trick is building speed and releasing at just the right moment: something close to 45 degrees usually gets the best distance. And watch your step, because a foot over the line is a foul.

Fun facts

  • Players tried every trick in the book to tap faster, from rulers to rubbing a coin across the buttons.
  • In Japan the game was called Hyper Olympic.
  • The six events loop with tougher qualifying marks each time around.

In the arcade

Just like the arcade, only from your own couch: sit down at the Track & Field cabinet, invite your friend once they're in the lobby and compete event by event. Nothing to install: it runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free.

Anyone else in the lobby can drop in as a spectator and watch live while chatting, and your scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
