History
Neo Turf Masters came out in 1996 for SNK's Neo Geo. It was developed by Nazca, the same studio that brought Metal Slug to life that year, and you can tell from the polish: smoothly animated golfers and courses packed with detail. In Japan it was called Big Tournament Golf.
What made it special was the balance between arcade and sim. You get it from the very first swing, but wind, lie and the break of the green make you think about every shot. That's why it's still one of the most beloved arcade golf games around.
How to play
Before each shot you choose your club and aim, then control power with a meter that rises and falls. Spin is set as you swing: hook or slice the ball, or hit it higher or lower. Always check the wind arrow and your lie, because you won't get the same distance out of a bunker or the rough.
On the green you've got to read the slope and nail the speed. There are several courses set in different countries, and every golfer has their own mix of power and accuracy. A hole-in-one isn't out of the question, and when it happens, the on-screen celebration lives up to it.
