SNK released Super Sidekicks 2: The World Championship in 1994 on its Neo Geo system, the same year the World Cup came to the United States. The company's soccer series became an arcade staple right next to its fighting games.
More sequels followed, but the second one is among the best remembered for its balance between pure arcade action and the feel of a real match.
How to play
You control whichever player is closest to the ball. The buttons handle passing, shooting and, on defense, slide tackles to win the ball back. Knowing when to pass and when to shoot is half the game.
The game rewards going for goal: a well-timed through ball and a clean finish beat fancy dribbling every time. In tournament mode you work your way through round after round against other national teams until you reach the final.
Matches are short, perfect for the classic instant rematch.
