Walk into an arcade in the mid-80s and Hang-On was hard to miss: a near full-size motorcycle you climbed onto and leaned left and right to steer. There was always a line to ride it, and whoever didn't get on stood around watching the screen while the current rider scraped a knee through the turns.

At UsuArcade you can play Hang-On online for free, right in your browser. No bike required: sit down at its cabinet in the lobby, drop in a virtual coin and hit the road against the clock.

History

Sega put out Hang-On in 1985 with Yu Suzuki leading development. It was one of Sega's first games built around fast sprite scaling for a real sense of speed and depth, tech the company pushed even further in Space Harrier, Out Run and After Burner.

Besides the ride-on bike, there were upright cabinets with handlebars. The game's success led to Super Hang-On in 1987, which added more courses and a turbo button.

How to play

Hang-On is a race against the clock. You ride through a string of stages and every checkpoint adds a few seconds to the timer. Hit zero before the next one and it's game over. You don't have to beat the other riders, you just have to be fast and stay on the bike.

Use the handlebars to throttle, brake and steer. Corners are everything: come in too hot or clip another rider and you go flying, losing precious seconds. Good players learn to ease off the gas for a split second and carve through without slamming the brakes.

Fun facts

  • The famous deluxe cabinet was a motorcycle you leaned on to steer.
  • It's one of Yu Suzuki's early hits, before he made Out Run.
  • The sequel, Super Hang-On, arrived in 1987.

In the arcade

On UsuArcade, Hang-On is one player per game: you sit down at the cabinet and it's all yours. But you're not really alone: friends can drop in as spectators, watch live and chat in the lobby.

It runs in your browser on phone or PC, gamepad supported, nothing to install, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Your best score goes on the arcade's high score board for everyone else to chase.
