Super Hang-On

Super Hang-On was the motorcycle everybody wanted to climb on. Leaning into the curves, feeling the cabinet tilt with you and watching the roadside signs whip past was as close to being a racer as a kid could get in 1987. If you couldn't get a turn, you stood there watching somebody else squeak into every checkpoint.

History

Sega released it in 1987 as the follow-up to 1985's Hang-On, one of its biggest hits. It came as a ride-on bike cabinet and as an upright with handlebars.

The sequel expanded the original with multiple courses and a soundtrack with several songs to choose from, something pretty rare at the time. It was ported to the Genesis and the home computers of the day.

How to play

You start by picking a continent, and each one is a difficulty level: Africa for beginners, then Asia, America and Europe for experts, with more stages the harder you go. Then you pick the song that'll ride along with you.

Reach each checkpoint before time runs out. Hit the gas, brake before the tight turns and lean the bike to take the line. When you're near top speed you can hit the turbo button for some extra miles per hour, but in a curve it can send you straight into a billboard. Crashing costs precious seconds, so the golden rule is clean lines.
