Out Run wasn't just a racing game, it was a one-minute vacation: the red convertible, your girlfriend riding shotgun, the beach rolling by and a soundtrack you're still humming decades later. At the arcade, the Out Run cabinet always had a crowd.

History

Sega released Out Run in 1986, directed by Yu Suzuki fresh off Hang-On. It shipped in several cabinets, including a sit-down deluxe model whose seat moved with the turns, and it became one of the biggest arcade hits of its day.

The big idea was turning a race into a road trip: you're not battling other drivers, you're racing the clock, and at the end of every stage you choose which road to take.

How to play

You drive with a wheel, gas, brake and a two-speed shifter, low and high. Each stage has a time limit, and hitting the checkpoint adds time for the next one. Traffic, tight curves and roadside obstacles are the enemy: hit one hard and your car goes tumbling.

At the end of each stage the road forks left or right. A full run covers five stages and finishes at one of five destinations, so there are plenty of routes to learn. Before you take off, you choose your song on the car radio.

In the arcade
