Daytona USA was the row of cabinets that owned the arcade in the mid-90s: several seats side by side, force-feedback wheels and a group of friends dropping quarters at the same time to race each other. Plus that song that stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

It isn't on UsuArcade yet, but it's on the arcade wish list.

History

Sega released Daytona USA in 1994, and its polygon graphics stopped people in their tracks. Toshihiro Nagoshi led the project, and it became one of Sega's biggest arcade hits of the 90s.

Cabinets could be linked so several players raced in the same event, which turned every game into a showdown.

How to play

You drive a stock car on courses of rising difficulty: a beginner oval, an advanced track through canyons and a tricky expert circuit. Pick automatic or manual, and manual lets you squeeze more out of the car.

Races start rolling, with plenty of rivals ahead and the clock against you: checkpoints add time. Brake or downshift early for the tight turns, and use the draft of the cars ahead to slingshot past on the straights.

Fun facts

  • Linked cabinets let up to eight players race together.
  • Its soundtrack, sung by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, is one of the most memorable in arcade history.
  • The player's car, the Hornet, carries the number 41.

In the arcade

Daytona USA is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on the wish list, and you can vote for it with the “I want to play it” button. Meanwhile, the arcade has Out Run for coastal road trips and Hang-On for leaning into the curves on a bike, right in your browser with friends watching your run.

Once Daytona USA lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
