In the late 90s, the Tekken 3 cabinet was the center of the arcade. There was always somebody holding down the machine by mashing with Eddy, and somebody behind them, quarter in hand, ready to prove that doesn't work against a solid Paul. The fights looked so good people stopped to watch even if they weren't playing.
For plenty of fans, it's the best game in the series.
History
Namco brought it to arcades in 1997. The story jumps nearly twenty years past Tekken 2 and introduces a new generation of fighters led by Jin Kazama, alongside veterans like Paul, Law, King, Nina and Yoshimitsu.
The PlayStation version was a huge hit and added extra modes, but the game was born in the arcade.
How to play
Each button controls a limb: left punch, right punch, left kick and right kick. Combine them with the joystick for throws, combo strings and grabs.
The big change from earlier games is the sidestep: you can step into or out of the background to dodge attacks, which makes fights feel far more three-dimensional. Jumps are lower and the pace is faster, too.

- The final boss is Ogre, an ancient god of fighting.
- It runs on Namco's System 12 arcade hardware.
