Few cabinets are remembered as fondly as Sega Rally: two seats side by side, two force-feedback wheels and two friends power-sliding through the dirt while a crowd gathered behind them. Your co-driver called out the turns, and all you could think about was not flying off at the next one.

Sega Rally Championship isn't on UsuArcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you want it in the lobby, vote with “I want to play it.”

History

Sega released Sega Rally Championship in 1995, with polygon graphics that blew people away in arcades at the time. It was one of the first arcade racers to focus on rally and on how a car handles differently depending on the surface.

You could pick the Toyota Celica GT-Four or the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, two rally legends of the day. Its handling, somewhere between arcade and sim, was so loved that it became a benchmark for racing games that came after.

How to play

Pick your car and transmission, automatic or manual, and race the clock and the field across stages with different surfaces: desert dirt, muddy forest roads and mountain blacktop. Every surface grips differently, and learning to brake before the turn and kick the back end out at just the right moment is the whole game.

In championship mode you string stages together and need a good enough finish on each one to keep going. Your co-driver warns you about what's coming, like left or right turns and how sharp they are: listen up, because turns come at you fast in this one.

Fun facts

  • The cars were the Toyota Celica GT-Four and the Lancia Delta HF Integrale.
  • Grip changes with the surface: dirt and asphalt drive nothing alike.
  • Cabinets were usually installed in linked pairs so you could race a friend.

In the arcade

Coming soon to UsuArcade. Once it's here, you'll be able to race from your browser with the lobby watching your slides and battle for the best time. Until then, if speed is your thing, hop into Out Run, lean into the turns on Hang-On or chase flags in Rally-X: all three are in the lobby and free to play.

Once Sega Rally Championship lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
