You could hear Operation Wolf from across the arcade: a submachine gun bolted to the cabinet that rattled and kicked with every burst. Aim, squeeze and you were the star of an 80s action flick, one commando against an entire army.
There was always a little crowd behind you counting how many mags you had left.
History
Taito released it in 1987, and it became one of the biggest gun games of its day. The mounted gun with recoil was its calling card and set it apart from simpler shooting gallery games.
It got ported to a ton of late-80s home computers and consoles and was followed in arcades by Operation Thunderbolt.
How to play
The screen scrolls sideways as soldiers, vehicles, choppers and boats pour in. Aim the gun and fire; the side button launches rocket grenades, perfect for armor and helicopters.
Ammo is limited, so you have to shoot pickups to grab extra mags and grenades. Every hit you take fills your damage meter, and when it's full, game over. Across six missions you fight your way through to rescue the hostages, without shooting them by mistake.
Fun facts
- The cabinet's gun had real recoil thanks to a built-in mechanism.
- Shooting hostages or civilians costs you health.
- Its follow-up, Operation Thunderbolt, let two players shoot side by side with two guns.
