If NBA Jam turned basketball into an arcade spectacle, NBA Hangtime was the follow-up fans were waiting for: four players at once, out-of-this-world dunks and trash talk you could hear from the front door. There was always somebody leaning on the cabinet with a quarter, waiting to get next.

NBA Hangtime isn't on UsuArcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you want it in the lobby, vote with “I want to play it.”

History

Midway released NBA Hangtime in 1996. It came from the same team behind NBA Jam, just under a new name, since the rights to that brand had ended up with another company. The spirit was the same: over-the-top, lightning-fast two-on-two hoops.

One of its big additions was creating your own player, saving him with your initials and a PIN, and bringing him back next time. It was one of the first arcade sports games to let you do that.

How to play

Each team fields two real NBA players from that era. You've got buttons to pass, shoot and turbo, which drains and recharges. Hit turbo at the right moment and players launch into impossible leaps and throw down acrobatic slams.

On defense you can steal, block and shove with no fouls called, just like NBA Jam. Hit enough shots in a row and your player catches fire, shooting lights-out for a while. And if you're playing four-way, split the roles: one guy runs the offense while the other one flies.

Fun facts

  • It was made by the NBA Jam team, renamed because of licensing.
  • You could create your own player and save him with your initials and a PIN.
  • Like NBA Jam, there are no fouls: shoving is totally legal.

In the arcade

Coming soon to UsuArcade. When it arrives, the idea is classic: four friends on the same machine, even with everyone at home, and the lobby watching the game. Until then, you can play NBA Jam, its direct predecessor, two-player right now, or check out the soccer of Super Sidekicks 2 and the track records of Track & Field: all in the lobby and free.
