Mortal Kombat II always had a crowd around it, and not always for the person playing: half the kids were there to see if somebody could pull off the Fatality they'd read about in a magazine or heard about from a friend's cousin. Digitized fighters, over-the-top gore and secrets everywhere.

It isn't in the UsuArcade arcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you still know the moves by heart, give it your vote.

History

Midway released it in 1993, a year after the first Mortal Kombat, with Ed Boon and John Tobias leading the way again. It upgraded almost everything: more fighters, sharper graphics, smoother moves and a darker sense of humor.

It was one of the most popular games of its day in arcades and at home, at a time when the series' violence was at the center of the US debate over video game age ratings.

How to play

It's a one-on-one fighter with five buttons: high and low punch, high and low kick, and block. Every fighter has special moves done with joystick-and-button combos, and the uppercut is still the most feared hit in the series.

When you win the fight, FINISH HIM or FINISH HER flashes on screen, and that's your cue to try a finishing move. On top of Fatalities, this game added Friendships and Babalities, tongue-in-cheek finishers. Single-player mode takes you through the tournament up to Kintaro and, finally, Emperor Shao Kahn.

Fun facts

  • It introduced the joke finishers Friendship and Babality.
  • New fighters included Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, Jax and Kung Lao.
  • The final boss is Shao Kahn, emperor of Outworld.

In the arcade

Mortal Kombat II is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on the arcade wishlist and you can vote for it with the “I want to play it” button; the most-wanted games get in first.

Until then, the arcade has Street Fighter II for one-on-one grudge matches with your friends, plus co-op brawlers like Double Dragon and Final Fight. Free in your browser, with chat, spectators and arcade high scores.

Once Mortal Kombat II lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
