Fatal Fury was SNK's answer to the fighting game craze that was taking over arcades in the early 90s. It landed on Neo Geo cabinets in 1991 with the Bogard brothers and Joe Higashi, plus a revenge story plenty of us followed one quarter at a time.
It kicked off a huge series and gave us characters who'd later headline The King of Fighters.
History
It was directed by Takashi Nishiyama, who had previously worked on Capcom's original Street Fighter. The story centers on the King of Fighters tournament run by Geese Howard, the crime boss of South Town, who was behind the death of Terry and Andy's adoptive father.
Its big twist was two fighting planes: fighters could jump into the background and back to the front, which was pretty rare back then.
How to play
Pick Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard or Joe Higashi and work your way through a string of opponents to reach Geese. You get punch, kick and throw buttons, with joystick motions for special moves.
When a second player jumps in, you can team up in some fights against the CPU before eventually squaring off against each other. Learning to switch planes at the right moment saves you a lot of hits.
