Altered Beast opened with a booming voice from the cabinet ordering you to rise from your grave, and you were hooked from that moment. A resurrected Roman soldier who bulked up with every power orb until he exploded into a full-on beast. Seeing that first transformation was something you told everybody about the next day at school.
It's not playable in our arcade yet, but it's on the UsuArcade wish list, and you can vote to bring it in sooner.
History
Sega released it in 1988 on its System 16 hardware. The story, loosely based on Greek mythology, has Zeus raising a centurion from the dead to rescue his daughter Athena from Neff, lord of the underworld.
It got even more famous when the Genesis version was bundled with the console early on, so a lot of kids played it on the living room TV before they ever saw the cabinet.
How to play
You fight your way right with punches and kicks against zombies, demons and underworld creatures. Certain white wolves drop power orbs: each one makes you stronger, and the third one turns you into a beast with special attacks.
The beast changes every stage: a werewolf throwing fireballs, a flying dragon shooting lightning, a bear with petrifying breath, a tiger and finally a golden werewolf. Once you've transformed, you can take on the stage boss, who shows up taunting you with his trademark laugh.
Fun facts
- “Rise from your grave!” is one of the most quoted lines in arcade history.
