Zaxxon wowed you just by standing there: a ship flying diagonally over a space fortress, its shadow on the ground giving everything real depth. Sega released it in 1982, and it always pulled a crowd of onlookers.
Its isometric view was something brand new, and threading the gaps in the walls with one eye on the altimeter was a real challenge.
History
Sega pitched it as one of the first games with an isometric view, giving a sense of 3D that players hadn't really seen before.
Its success led to plenty of home versions and sequels like Super Zaxxon.
How to play
Push up and down to change altitude and left and right to dodge. The altimeter on the left and your ship's shadow tell you how high you're flying.
Blast fuel tanks to keep from running dry, dodge electric barriers and gun turrets, and shoot down enemy fighters in open space. At the end waits the Zaxxon robot, and you have to hit it before it hits you.
