When Virtua Fighter hit arcades in 1993, people stopped just to stare: fighters built out of polygons, moving with a realism nobody had seen, and a camera that swung around the action. Sega had just kicked open the door to 3D fighting games.
No fireballs here. It was all martial arts, throws and knocking your opponent clean out of the ring.
History
It was built by Sega's AM2 team, led by Yu Suzuki, on the Model 1 board. It's widely considered the first 3D polygon fighting game, and its influence on the genre was huge.
It spawned a long line of sequels and came home on the Sega Saturn, where it was one of the big sellers of the launch lineup.
How to play
There are just three buttons: guard, punch and kick. Combine them with the stick for throws, special moves and combos unique to each fighting style.
Win by draining your opponent's health or pushing them out of the ring. There are eight fighters, including Akira, Pai, Lau, Sarah, Jacky, Kage, Wolf and Jeffry, and waiting at the end is Dural, a metallic fighter who mimics other styles.
Fun facts
- It's considered the first 3D polygon fighting game.
- It uses only three buttons: guard, punch and kick.
- The final boss, Dural, has a chrome-like metallic body.
